Simrad develops powerful drive units based on long experiences from the rough conditions in the North Atlantic Ocean as well as the high humidity and high temperatures in Florida and other tropical areas. They drive the rudder with precision and endurance through the toughest conditions and on the longest crossings. The drive can be used on boats from 30 to 45 feet l.o.a. (or up to 150 Kgm rudder torque) equipped with a mechanical steering system that can be back driven. Due to the electro mechanical clutch, the direct drive can be back driven with the force of a finger tip leaving the mechanical steering as sensitive as without drive unit. The DD15 includes the Simrad RF300 Rudder Feedback unit with transmission link and 10 m (30 feet) of cable. It transforms the angular travel of the rudder to a digital signal read by the autopilot steering computer

The Simrad HLD2000 MK2D Dual Cylinder Linear Drive designed for boats with mechanical steering systems such as wire and cable steering (Edson, Whitlock, Teleflex).
Linear drives are the most preferred on sailboats. When attached to the quadrant or tiller it has direct control and slack in wires or cable is avoided. Several hydraulic models are available in the HLD range. They are all equipped with a bypass valve and need not be detached when steering by hand.
